Last year I attended the Gluten Free Expo in SLC, UT. I love attending events like this because of the people and brands that I meet! If you ever have a chance to go to one of these events, you definitely should, and you also should definitely come hungry #somanysamples. If you’ve been following my blog, you will know that our family loves Vivian’s Live Again products, and I was excited to see the owner, Laura, running her booth at the Expo.
I went over to purchase a few products and introduce myself, and during the conversation she told me how her business got started. It’s an amazing story and I knew right then that I had to share it. Over the past few months, I’ve shared a few of our favorite recipes using Vivian’s Live Again products. You can find links to these recipes below. All of them are simple, quick, and easy to make. They’re also gluten free and dairy free so I’m sure many of you can enjoy them. Of course, we also think these recipes are quite delicious This Easy Gluten Free Gravy is definitely the best gravy I’ve had.
I loved working with these products so much, that I reached out to Laura from Vivian’s Live Again and asked if she would share her story with all of you, and include a giveaway so you can try her products, too. She has graciously agreed, and you can enter to win one of 2 prize packs below (WOOT!)
I’m also running a giveaway on my Instagram page, where you can enter to win 3 packages of Vivian’s Live Again Pudding Mixes: 1 Chocolate, 1 Vanilla, 1 Banana. These mixes are unique because the pudding sets up with any kind of dairy free milk. It’s creamy, smooth, and tastes amazing. The vanilla pudding is the secret ingredient in these Soft Sugar Cookies which are perfect for Valentine’s Day:
Enjoy Laura’s story, and be sure to keep reading for the giveaway and some fun facts about the brand. Comment below and let us know if you’ve tried Vivian’s Live Again, and leave her a note. I’m sure she would love to hear from you!
Here’s Laura’s story:
“The journey into the gluten free world began for me with a friend at church that had celiac disease. Celiac had not been on my radar before. As I asked questions and spent more time with her, I learned three things that did not seem right to me:
Available food was not very palatable.
Gluten free food was expensive.
The gluten free diet excluded my friend from social functions.
It’s important to note that my mom was a home economics teacher who was an excellent cook and taught us a lot about the science of food. She also made sure we had family dinner together each evening. Family dinner became my life training ground as we discussed daily lessons learned and enjoyed each other’s company (most nights) around good food.
My father was an engineer and transmitted the belief to us that problems are solvable. He kept us with him on Saturdays and we learned to fix things by figuring out the nature of the problem, finding relevant information, then working out a solution. Because of this background, I believe that problems are solvable. My thoughts often start with “There’s got to be a way to….” Or “I wonder if…”.
With desires educated by my parents, I set out to help people eat together even if they were gluten free. I began by learning more about GF cooking and the lifestyle changes it necessitated. I ended up in a class about gluten free cooking sponsored by a local store. During the class I sat next to a woman who along with her 8-year-old daughter had celiac disease. She told me, “It’s a disaster! I can’t cook anymore. I used to open up a can of Campbell’s cream soup and make everything.” I replied, “Oh, I can help you with that. I know how to make a mix for gluten free soup. What’s your email address?” I sent her a recipe for a cream soup mix made with powdered milk along with a list of basic seasonings for different cuisines like Mexican and Italian. The same list appears now in the converting recipes section of the Vivian’s Live Again website.
Later that summer, I helped plan the food for a church led girls camp. One of the girls was severely allergic to milk. The other women wanted to serve Dutch oven chicken that contained cream of chicken soup. When I explained that they could not make that particular dish because of the allergic girl, they said they would give her something else. I was deeply troubled that she would feel left out or different because of food. Soon I was wondering “I wonder if I could make that soup mix dairy free?” I found a soy milk powder and made a soup mix for the camp. The ladies cooking used their own recipe and everyone liked it. No one was left out. Success.
Those two experiences made me realize that I had an idea that would make it easy for people to eat together even when someone in the family or group needed to avoid gluten and dairy. The recipes were tasty and familiar, so I started the business Wheat Free Nutrition in 2011 and began making cream soups. Fittingly, the first store to carry my product was the one in which I took the class that inspired the business. Later I changed the business name to Vivian’s Live Again after my mother, Vivian, from whom I learned that dinner should be about love as well as food. I added Live Again to represent giving back familiar recipes and family traditions.
There was much more for me to learn about food science and running a business, but I have loved it. Since the beginning, our product line has grown to include cream of chicken and mushroom soups, tomato soup, and Alfredo sauce. We recently introduced an allergen free whipped topping and pudding that sets up in non-dairy milk for people with additional allergies. Our latest product is a whole grain muffin mix.
Although I love creating new products, my greatest joy comes when I can help someone make a dish they miss, or help a mother struggling to feed allergic children, or empower someone newly diagnosed with information and help to adopt their new diet. It is the people, the love, and the food that make it all worth it. I have the best job in the world.”
Don’t you love this story? I was so inspired that Laura’s conversation with one woman sparked this amazing journey of serving the gluten free community. It shows me that there is so much good in the world and we can all find ways to help each other out.
