There is a lot to love when it comes to casseroles! They’re perfect for a busy weeknight because you can make them ahead as a freezer meal, then pop in the oven for an easy dinner.

Typical Ingredients in Gluten Free Casserole Recipes (& tips for gluten free subs)

Tater Tots

Gluten-free tater tot casserole is a kid favorite, not to mention a parent favorite because it’s a ridiculously easy recipe!

Pro Tip: some tots contain wheat so be sure check the label carefully.

Green Beans

Green bean casserole is a favorite recipe for the holidays, and is actually pretty easy to make gluten free! Make this classic for a fun side dish to any meal.

Pro Tip: Most grocery stores sell gluten free french fried onions alongside the regular french fried onions during the month of November. Buy a few extra cans to keep on hand for the remainder of the year!

Fresh or Leftover Chicken

I feel like a gluten-free chicken casserole is the ultimate classic comfort food. My mom often made a wild rice chicken casserole when I was growing up and my whole family now enjoys it just as much as I did. Casseroles are a great way to use up leftover chicken!

Pro Tip: Costco rotisserie chicken is gluten free!

Beans

Adding black beans to gluten-free recipes is a great way to boost your intake of iron, fiber, and b vitamins. For those on a gf diet, especially if you have celiac disease, consuming more of these nutrients is essential because you’re eating less fortified foods.

Gluten-Free Pasta

Whether you’re making a tuna noodle casserole or baked ziti, there are lots of gluten-free pasta alternatives you can easily sub for regular pasta.

Pro Tip: choose a high quality gluten free pasta that won’t turn to mush. My favs are Jovial, which I buy on Thrive Market because they carry all the varieties including egg noodles (!) and Tinkyada.

Cream of Mushroom Soup

This is a typical ingredient in many casseroles, and obviously when you’re making gluten free casserole recipes you’ll need to use a gluten-free cream of mushroom soup.

I often use the Pacific brand and you can find it in most grocery stores with the other canned soups.

Pro Tip: If you need a dairy free option, I like Vivian’s Live Again. Vivian’s also makes a gluten free cream of chicken soup mix which makes the creamiest, most delicious gluten free gravy ever.

Classic Pyrex rectangular casserole dish with lid (I love having a lid! makes putting away leftovers so easy)

Lodge cast iron skillet (I use my large cast iron skillet All.The.Time)

Le Creuset Covered Stoneware is a high-end, beautiful addition to your kitchen and comes in lots of colors!

Oh my goodness ... so many delicious ideas, whether you follow a gluten free diet or not! Perfect timing, too, since I'm craving cozy casseroles during these colder winter months. The big question is ... where to start!?!?
