Move over maple! This buttermilk syrup tastes like caramel and is super easy to make. Tastes delicious over pancakes, french toast, waffles, ice cream, and just about anything else you can dream up.
Ingredients
- ½ cup salted butter
- ¾ cup sugar
- ½ cup buttermilk
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
Instructions
- Combine butter, sugar, and buttermilk in a large saucepan.
- Heat over medium heat, stirring frequently, until butter is melted and mixture comes to a gentle simmer.
- Remove from heat and add baking soda while stirring. Mixture will bubble up quite a bit, which is why you use a large pan.
- Stir well and add the vanilla.

This is my hubby's all time favorite syrup. We love it on German pancakes and it also makes a good ice-cream topping. Yum!

Ooh, I'm going to have to try it as ice cream topping-that sounds heavenly!

This is a new one for me. I've made pancakes with buttermilk in them, but never on them! It sounds like a wonderfully buttery tasting topping.

How do you recommend storing this? Does it need to be refrigerated, because of the buttermilk? Thank you.

Hello, I am curious how you recommend to store this? Since it is made with buttermilk, does it require refrigeration? Or does the cooking resolve that issue and it is fine stored in a food pantry?
thereislifeafterwheat@gmail.com says
You will need to store in the fridge, it will keep for about a week depending on the expiration date of the buttermilk you use.
