The BEST Gluten Free Bread Brands (posted February 2023)
1. Canyon Bakehouse
Considered the favorite bread by gluten-free eaters, it is available in most grocery stores and comes in white, Hawaiian, or whole grain varieties.
Canyon Bakehouse Products include a heritage loaf that is normal-sized unlike most gluten-free loaves, as well as hamburger and hot dog buns, bagels, and English Muffins. Check their website for a dollar off coupon.
Certified gluten free by GFCO, a gluten-free certification organization
Where to buy: Walmart, Target, Smith's/Kroger, and most other grocery stores.
2. Mrs Hewitt's
Mrs Hewitt's has the closest taste and texture to real bread that I've been able to find. It's so good for French toast!
It is also dairy free, egg free, and soy free. It is not widely available in stores yet, but you can purchase online or if you're in UT you can purchase from their warehouse (be sure to watch for sales!)
Certified gluten free
Where to buy: online or at one of their warehouse sales
3. Trader Joe's
Many swear that Trader Joe's has the best gluten free bread, and I would argue that they might, but only if you're talking about their Italian Bread variety.
Be sure to check out their seasonal bagels while you're there!
Where to buy: Trader Joe's stores
4. Against the Grain
Want a delicious baguette? Against the Grain is a good option. They also make rolls, buns, and pita bread.
Where to buy: check our local grocery store or online.
5. Carbonaut
Carbonaut is a newer brand that has a soft and fluffy texture similar to traditional bread. It also only has 1 net carb, making it a great option for those who eat gluten-free and need to watch their carbs.
Note that Carbonaut also makes loaves that are not gluten free and the packaging looks almost identical, so be sure you're getting the correct variety.
Certified gluten free
Where to buy:Target, Walmart, Sprouts, Whole Foods
6. Little Northern Bakehouse
From pizza crusts to organic loaves and bagels, Little Northern Bakehouse has a lot to offer. We found the taste and texture to hold up well, too. Free from: peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, wheat (gluten), soy, coconut and sesame!
Certified gluten free
Where to buy: Sprouts, Natural Grocer's, Fresh Market
7. Schar
Lots of options here, including croissants, ciabatta, regular loaves, and so much more. This is a favorite among those with celiac disease as Schar is known for testing below 5ppm of gluten and is readily available at many stores.
Certified gluten free
Where to buy: gluten free section or bread aisle at Walmart, Smith's/Kroger, Fresh Market, Natural Grocer's
8. Three Bakers
Another popular option, it has a great taste and texture but is a little on the small side (average for a gluten free loaf, but they don't' make a larger size like some brands do). They recently released brioche buns which look delicious!
Certified gluten free
Where to buy: A little harder to find, with limited shipping options as well. Find in the freezer section at Sprouts, Safeway, and other select locations
9. BFree
I first tried BFree's pita bread at an expo. It was delicious and I was excited to have a gluten free pita bread option! They also offer breads, dinner rolls, panini, and tortillas.
Many of their products come in a regular or whole grain variety.
Certified gluten free
Where to buy: Find in the bakery sections of Smith's/Kroger, Sprouts, Walmart. As of 2.23.2022, they offer free shipping on orders over $30 which is a great deal!
10. Glutino
My favorite Glutino product is their English Muffins, which are also a great hamburger bun option! They don't have many, if any other bread products but the English Muffins are definitely worth the buy.
Certified gluten free
Where to buy: Freezer section of Walmart, Smith's/Kroger, Natural Grocers, Sprouts
11. Franz
A little chewier than some gluten free breads, but my husband likes Franz a lot. They have white and multigrain varieties as well as cinnamon raisin, hot dog buns, and hamburger buns.
Certified gluten free
Where to buy: Bread aisle of Walmart or online. As of 2.23.2023, they're offering free shipping on orders of 4 or more products, which is a great deal!
12. Rudi's
Lots of options including sourdough(!), brioche buns, and even tortillas that are actually soft and bendable.
Certified gluten free
Where to buy: Freezer section of Smith's/Kroger, Whole Foods, Natural Grocers, and some Sprouts locations.
Note that Rudi's also makes loaves that are not gluten free and the packaging looks almost identical, so be sure you're getting the correct variety.
13. Simple Kneads
If you're looking for a healthier option, this is a great one. Simple Kneads makes sourdough loaves in four different varieties: Cinnamon Raisin, Pumpernickel, Quinoa Power Grains, and a traditional sourdough loaf.
All of their products are top 9 free and have a hearty texture and flavor.
Gluten free facility
Where to buy: Some Whole Foods and Lowes, online might be your best bet. Hungry Root meal delivery service has offered their bread at times as well.
14. New Grains Bakery
If you have a gluten free hamburger, hot dog or sandwich at a restaurant in Utah, it's probably from New Grains Bakery. Their products are good and they have so many gluten free bread options including stuffing mixes, croutons, and lots of bread varieties.
I will add that their English Muffins are yummy, but not necessarily the texture of a classic English Muffin.
Certified gluten free
Where to buy: Harmons, Good Earth, online might be your best bet if you don't live in UT.
15. Katz
Best known for their donuts (find them in the freezer section, they're delish!), Katz also offers bread, English Muffins, and even Texas Toast.
Certified gluten free
Where to buy: Sprouts, Whole Foods, Fresh Market, Safeway, Walmart
16. Sam's Choice
Tastes a lot like Franz, which makes me wonder if it is a white-label product.
Certified gluten free
Where to buy: Walmart
17. Genius Bread
I admittedly haven't tried this brand yet, but they've got me curious! Their products have prebiotics and fiber and they have multigrain options. If you've tried it, please leave a comment and let me know what you thought!
Certified gluten free
Where to buy: Sprouts, Harris Teeter, and others
18. Kim and Jake's
Best baguette I've ever eaten, and I never would have guessed it's gluten free. If you're in the Denver, CO area, you must check out their bakery and grab a baguette! They also make rolls and bread.
Certified gluten free
Where to buy: Sprouts, Harris Teeter, and others
19. Udi's
This brand is admittedly controversial, as there have been many complaints about huge holes in Udi's loaves (which are already way too small).
Udi's is worth mentioning because some people still love it as it has a soft texture and is available at Warehouse stores such as Costco, making it an inexpensive option that offers a variety of flavors.
Certified gluten free
Where to buy: Walmart, Costco, online
20. Aldi's
If you are blessed to have an Aldi's nearby, grab a loaf of their gluten-free bread while you're there. It is similar in taste and texture to Franz bakery bread, fairly soft and chewy and a little on the small side.
Certified gluten free
Where to buy: Aldi's
21. Bread Srsly
I've heard great things about this brand, but haven't tried it yet. Bread Srsly makes artisan sourdough loaves and rolls with minimal, real-food ingredients.
Certified gluten free
Where to buy: Mostly online.

Where to Buy Gluten Free Bread
Buy gluten-free bread products at grocery stores like Walmart and Target, specialty stores like Whole Foods or Sprouts, health food stores, or online.
There are quite a few gluten free bread brands at Walmart including Shar, Franz, Sam's Choice, and more depending on your area.
Do a Google search to see if you have a dedicated gluten free bakery near you! If they offer bread, it is often fresh and much better than anything you could buy at the store. Here in UT, Sweet Cake Bake Shop is my favorite place to get bread and rolls.
Best Gluten Free Bread Mixes
gfJules is definitely the best gluten free bread mix I've found, it makes the softest, fluffiest bread that you won't even know it's gluten free.
Pamela's is a popular option available at many stores. While I haven't personally tried it, I have heard good things.
King Arthur Flour mixes always turn out so good. You can probably find this for the best price in stores rather than online.
What brand of gluten-free bread is best for stuffing?
Use a flour-based gluten free bread rather than one that is primarily made of starch to make a gluten free stuffing that will hold its shape and have a good texture. New Grains Bakery, Mrs Hewitts, and Canyon Bakehouse all work well.
Is Dave's Killer bread gluten-free?
Dave's Killer Bread is not gluten free. They currently do not offer any gluten-free products.
Is Ezekiel bread gluten-free?
Ezekial bread is not gluten free. Although it is technically flourless, it is made of wheat and other gluten-containing ingredients and is therefore not safe for someone with celiac disease, wheat allergy, or anyone else following a gluten-free diet.
Is sourdough bread gluten free?
Sourdough bread is not gluten free because it is made with wheat flour. There are some rumors circulating that the fermenting process used to make sourdough bread eliminates the gluten, but this is not true.
If you're gluten free and would like to enjoy the health benefits of sourdough, there are gluten free versions from New Grains Bakery, Schar, and Bread Srsly

I would love to find a really good gluten free doughnut! I have yet to find one.
thereislifeafterwheat@gmail.com says
Hi Joan! I think that's something we all have in common 😉 Our favorite for gluten free doughnuts is a mix you can get from Gluten Free Heaven. We've had it several times and they're just like real, fried, doughnuts. Here's their site: https://www.glutenfreeheaven.com/

Living on Southern Vancouver Island I am lucky to have several great producers locally. Portofino Bakeries in Victoria carries and amazing onion / cheese bread. There is a gluten free bakery in Duncan called Bake My Day that carries wonderful "take and bake" pastry , all purpose doughs and my favourite item in the shop is their raspberry lemon curd tart. A bite of heaven. There are good local store brand sandwich loaves that are delicious and very budget friendly, Save on Foods is #1 and followed closely at #2 is Thrifty Foods sandwich bread.
thereislifeafterwheat@gmail.com says
Wow, this all sounds SO good Kelly! Thank you so much for sharing your favorites so others can enjoy, too.

Have you tried any Three Baker's products? If not, we'd love to give you an opportunity to see how we may rank amongst your faves 🙂

Hi Susan, I haven't tried Three Baker's yet. You can contact me via the "Work With Me" page on my site's menu. Thanks! https://thereislifeafterwheat.com/work-with-me/

I adore Schaar's breads. I've found them at home in NY, and also in vacation in the Caribbean islands. They make a tender artisan sourdough bread that brings back memories of my former love of wheat. Udi's is pretty good, but can tend to fall apart or get crumbly. I've tried Pam's bread mix, and found it very good.
thereislifeafterwheat@gmail.com says
Thanks for the suggestions, Paula! I have heard great things about Schaar but we unfortunately can't have it because of soy 🙁 The sourdough sounds so good!
barb says
FYI all, Udi's is not Non GMO. I contacted them just this past week.
Their reply : at this time Udi’s is not certified GMO free
thereislifeafterwheat@gmail.com says
Thank you for for the info Barb, either I mistyped it originally or they changed their status. All info I post here comes from the brand's website and/or packaging.
Gillie says
Love your site! I've found that if you bake Udi's baguettes, cool and then put into an airtight container overnight, it makes a great bun for a sub sandwich, or a banh mi. They are chewy and one baguette makes me two sandwiches. I've also baked them, cooled them, stored overnight and toasted until dry, then mix with corn bread for a great stuffing.
Nancy says
Little Northern Bakehouse - Great sandwich bread (my favorite is seeds and grains variety) and hamburger/hot dog buns. I used to like Canyon Bake House but then it started to feel too slimy (a lot of egg?). This bread is not all potato starch!
Highly recommend!

Thanks for the recommendation Nancy, we haven't tried this brand yet!

Attended a restaurant trade show in Columbus Ohio over the weekend. Great to see (and sample) so many GF options. Of special note were the bread and cookies of Enay Bakehouse. Owned by husband and wife...he is the chef..who are very committed to the best quality ingredients, and healthy GF. Both the bread and cookies are the best I have had. Also, waffkes! from Lopaus Point GF. Toast up to be warm and crunchy...chocolate chip no less. Women owned and operated with a healthy product that is delicious. I stopped on the way home and bought two packages at Lucky's. Both vendors are looking to expand wholesale, but are currently in stores. Definitely look for them near you.
thereislifeafterwheat@gmail.com says
I haven't heard of either of those brands, thanks for the info! -Celeste
Lindsay Alford says
Thanks for the very informative review. How do you store the Udi's Soft White bread after it thaws for 24 hours unopened?
thereislifeafterwheat@gmail.com says
I store it in the pantry for a few days. I wouldn't recommend storing it at room temp more than 3-4 days though, so freeze whatever you won't use that quickly. -Celeste
Dee says
I like Schar breads and crackers, etc. Their products are great! I discovered them in Germany where they have a wonderful selection. Their cereal(flakes) and chocolate chip cookies are really good. Have not found them here, but have found the breads, ciabatta rolls, and crackers too. Thanks for such a great site and good info. I read it faithfully!
thereislifeafterwheat@gmail.com says
Glad to hear you are enjoying Schar, they make some great products but almost all of them contain soy and my husband is allergic 🙁 Thank you for pointing it out so other readers can benefit! -Celeste
