Gluten Free Oreos Review
One of the hardest parts of eating gluten free due to celiac disease, non-celiac gluten sensitivity, or any other reason, is the price tag for trial and error.
Didn’t like that bag of cookies you bought? Too bad, so sad, you’re out 6 bucks for a handful of cookies that taste like you dropped them on the beach.
And sometimes, you just need to enjoy the nostalgia of milk’s favorite cookie, right?? After purchasing every box of gluten free sandwich cookies we could get our hands on, we can honestly say that there are some worth buying and some that would be better…somewhere else.

RATING METHOD
Our family of 7 tried each Oreo knock-off. For what it’s worth, only one of us is gluten free.
We rated each gluten-free Oreo swaps according to the following factors:
Flavor: Was the chocolate overly dark or light or did it adequately match the flavor profile of a traditional Oreo cookie? How did the filling compare to milk’s favorite cookie? Was there a bitter flavor or funky aftertaste?
Texture: was it crumbly? grainy? overly chewy? or did it have a good bite and satisfying texture?
Appearance: Did it look like a real Oreo? Were the cookies overly thick? How was the cookie:filling ratio? Did the color match the real thing?

Here are the final results from our gluten-free Oreo Cookie review, as tasted by 2 adults and 4 kids (plus a baby, but not sure if that one counts)
Kinnikinnick KinniToos
Try saying that three times fast 😉 This one has probably been around the longest and honestly, maybe they should consider updating their recipe.
Certified Gluten Free? YES, Beyond Celiac Allergens listed: None, but may contain eggs
Ingredients: Sugars (cane sugar, tapioca syrup), shortening (palm oil, modified palm oil), Pea starch, Potato starch*, White rice flour, Cocoa powder, Tapioca starch, Water, Pea protein, Salt, Natural flavour, Pea fibre, Sunflower lecithin, Inulin, Sodium bicarbonate, Modified cellulose
Pros:
- A variety of fun flavors including birthday cake, cinnamon bun, fudge, mint, and original
- Free from the top 8 allergens
- Dedicated gluten-free facility + lab tested
- Does not contain oats (for those that are intolerant or allergic)
Cons:
- The cookie wafers are very thick and have an overly crisp, grainy texture.
- The color is darker than regular Oreos
- Overall the flavor just wasn’t very appealing.

Would not recommend.
Simple Mills Nut Butter Stuffed Sandwich Cookies
We taste-tested 2 varieties: Peanut Butter and Cocoa Cashew Creme with high hopes for agluten free Nutter Butter substitute. Alas, we’ll have to stick with my homemade recipe because these just didn’t measure up.
Certified Gluten Free? YES GFCO Allergens listed: Cashews, Coconut
Ingredients: Cashews (Cashew Flour, Cashew Butter), Organic Coconut Sugar, Organic Palm Shortening, Tapioca Starch, Organic Buckwheat Flour, Alkalized Cocoa Powder, Carrot Fiber, Arrowroot, Organic Apple Cider Vinegar, Sea Salt, Baking Soda, Vanilla Extract, Rosemary Extract
Pros:
- A healthier option with simple, real ingredients and less sugar than traditional cookies
- I have heard from some that they love these, so if this style of cookie is appealing to you, it might be worth the try.
Cons:
- bitter flavor
- texture is definitely more crisp and hard than a traditional sandwich cookie
- Overall the flavor just wasn’t very appealing. We LOVE Simple Mills products at our house (have you tried their grahams? They’re the BEST!) but sadly these just didn’t cut it for us and no one wanted to eat them.

Would not recommend.
Cadia Gluten-Free Chocolate Sandwich Cookies
IMPORTANT: These cookies are not certified gluten free and are made in the same facility as lots of wheat products. If you have celiac disease, an allergy, or otherwise need to be careful with cross contact, I wouldn’t recommend this brand.
Certified Gluten Free? NO Allergens listed: Soy and egg. Produced in same facility as wheat
Ingredients: ICING SUGAR, FLOUR BLEND (CORN FLOUR, POTATO STARCH, CORN STARCH, WHITE RICE FLOUR, TAPIOCA STARCH, SOY FLOUR, POTATO FLOUR, CARRAGEENAN, GUM ARABIC, XANTHAN GUM), ORGANIC PALM OIL, CANOLA OIL, COCOA POWDER, INVERT SUGAR, NATURAL FLAVORS, CORN STARCH, EGG WHITES, SODIUM BICARBONATE, SEA SALT, SOY LECITHIN, AMMONIUM BICARBONATE.
Pros:
- Cookie color and thickness similar to a classic Oreo
- Came in 2nd for flavor/texture.
- Does not contain oats (for those that are intolerant or allergic)
Cons:
- Contains soy and egg, both major allergens
- Risk of cross contact, so definitely not an option for lots of folks
- A little heavy on the filling
- May be harder to find than other gluten-free options
Website: Cadia.com but their cookie page is broken.
If you don’t have celiac disease/wheat allergy and are not sensitive to cross contact, this is a good option.
Glutino Gluten Free Chocolate Sandwich Cookies
We noticed that many of the gluten free Oreo knock-offs contain oats. While oats are naturally gluten-free which is a problem if it’s not certified gf or you have an allergy or intolerance. This was the best oat-free option we found.
Certified Gluten Free? YES GFCO Allergens listed: Soy (soy lecithin)
Ingredients: ICING SUGAR, FLOUR BLEND (CORN FLOUR, POTATO STARCH, CORN STARCH, WHITE RICE FLOUR, TAPIOCA STARCH, SOY FLOUR, POTATO FLOUR, CARRAGEENAN, GUM ARABIC, XANTHAN GUM), ORGANIC PALM OIL, CANOLA OIL, COCOA POWDER, INVERT SUGAR, NATURAL FLAVORS, CORN STARCH, EGG WHITES, SODIUM BICARBONATE, SEA SALT, SOY LECITHIN, AMMONIUM BICARBONATE.
Pros:
- Oat free option
- Comes in 3 varieties including chocolate, vanilla creme, and super stuffed
- This was our favorite flavor/texture for oat-free varieties.
Cons:
- Sadly, it seems super difficult to create an Oreo-type cookie without oats. The texture definitely had a grainy mouthfeel, though better than the other oat-free cookies we tried.
Website: Glutino.com
Our top recommendation if you can’t tolerate oats. If you can have oats, there are better options.
Great Value Gluten Free Chocolate Sandwich Cookies
Walmart has really stepped up their gluten-free game the past few years, and some of the Great Value store brand gf options really are great! We had high hopes for their version of Oreos, but sadly they didn’t measure up in our Gluten Free Oreos review taste-test
Certified Gluten Free? YES GFCO Allergens listed: Soy
Ingredients: Sugar, rice flour, vegetable shortening (soybean oil, hydrogenated soybean oil), cornstarch, tapioca starch, cocoa (processed with alkali), nonfat milk, contains 2% or less of the following: potato starch, xanthan gum, molasses, sodium bicarbonate, salt, soy lecithin, ammonium bicarbonate, vanilla extract, natural flavors
Pros:
- Low price point coming in at around $2 less per package.
- Also comes in a vanilla creme Golden Oreo knock-off
- Easily found at most Walmarts
Cons:
- Paler in color
- Gritty texture
- Really just doesn’t compare well to the other oat-containing options
Website: Walmart.com
Not recommended.
Goodie Girl Gluten Free Chocolate Sandwich Cookies
Goodie Girl is a popular gluten-free cookie brand with lots of flavor options, including a Girl Scout thin mints knock-off. We put it to the test alongside the other gluten-free sandwich cookie varieties.
Certified Gluten Free? YES GFCO Allergens listed: Soy
Ingredients: CANE SUGAR, PALM OIL, RICE FLOUR, GLUTEN FREE WHOLE GRAIN OAT FLOUR, CORN STARCH, TAPIOCA STARCH, INVERT SYRUP, CONTAINS 2% OR LESS OF: POTATO STARCH, SOY LECITHIN, INULIN, NATURAL FLAVOR, SODIUM BICARBONATE, XANTHAN GUM, SALT, EDIBLE GLITTER (GUM ARABIC, RED CABBAGE EXTRACT, BEET JUICE CONCENTRATE), AMMONIUM BICARBONATE.
Pros:
- In addition to being certified gluten-free, Goodie Girl cookies are also made with purity protocol oats and peanut free.
- Lots of fun flavors including double stuffed, Birthday Cake, S’mores, and a classic chocolate creme (in addition to lots of other gf cookies)
- Easily found at most Walmart stores and many other locations
- Flavor profile is on point
- Great cookie:frosting ratio
Cons:
- While the flavor was perfection, we still found these to have that classic gluten-free grittiness.
Website: GoodieGirl.com
If you’re looking for fun gluten-free cookies in nostalgic and fresh flavors, these are a great option! They were a big hit with the kids. However, we found the texture to be a little off-putting and if you’re looking for a traditional Oreo texture there is a better option.
Nabisco Gluten Free Oreos
Now, the review you’ve been waiting for. After tasting all the other gluten-free sandwich cookies, we didn’t have high expectations for Nabisco but they did not disappoint!
Certified Gluten Free? YES GFCO Allergens listed: Soy
Ingredients: SUGAR, WHITE RICE FLOUR, TAPIOCA STARCH, PALM OIL, CANOLA OIL, WHOLE OAT FLOUR, CORNSTARCH, COCOA (PROCESSED WITH ALKALI), INVERT SUGAR, SOY LECITHIN, BAKING SODA, SALT, XANTHAN GUM, CHOCOLATE, ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR.
Pros:
- By far the best texture of all the gluten-free cookies we tried. So good that even our gluten-eating kids voted it a great substitute for the classic Oreo.
- Very close in taste and texture to a traditional Oreo
- We love that the cookie is engraved with the words “gluten free” so you can easily distinguish between versions. Thanks Nabisco!
- Available at pretty much every store, and also comes in double-stuffed and mint flavors.
- All Oreos, including gluten free Oreos, are dairy free. The only common allergen listed is soy and there are no animal products so Oreos are also suitable for vegans.
Cons:
- Contains oats, so not an option for those who are allergic or intolerant (read: my husband. boo)
- Slightly more fragile/crumbly than traditional Oreos, but not by much.
Website: Oreo.com
The official winner of our gluten free Oreos review. Congrats Nabisco.
Catalina Crunch Keto-Friendly Oreos
This one comes with a big disclaimer. While these cookies don’t declare any gluten-containing ingredients, they do have a shared facility warning. When I reached out to the brand on social, they stated that their products are not safe for those with celiac disease or who otherwise must avoid gluten. I only included this in our gluten free Oreos review as an option for those who are choosing to eat a gluten-free diet for reasons other than medical necessity, or who are otherwise not concerned about cross contact.
Certified Gluten Free? NO Allergens listed: None. Shared facility with tree nuts, peanut, wheat, egg, and soy.
Ingredients: Palm Fruit Oil**, Pea Protein, Allulose, Rice Flour, Cane Sugar, Chicory Root Fiber, Tapioca Flour, Cocoa Powder, Xanthan Gum, Natural Flavors, Sunflower Lecithin, Fruit And Vegetable Juice For Color, Baking Soda, Sea Salt, Stevia Extract, Peppermint Oil.
Pros:
- I didn’t find any other keto Oreo knock-offs, so it’s nice to have that option.
- The overal flavor was fairy good.
- Similar look and size to Oreos.
Cons:
- It’s so easy to get mint wrong, and the while the frosting was creamy and tasted pretty good, it was a little on the “this mint tastes kinda like toothpaste” side.
- At first bite, the cookie tasted pretty good. However, as you continued chewing they took on an overly chewy texture that was a little off-putting.
- Definitely not safe for anyone with celiac disease, or those who need to avoid cross contact.
Website: US.CatalinaCrunch.com
There aren’t many keto Oreos available so if that’s what you’re looking for and you don’t have to worry about cross contamination, this might be a good option for you.
CONCLUSION
In this official (unofficial) gluten free Oreos review, we found that Nabisco Gluten-Free Oreos are the best gluten free sandwich cookie option with a flavor, texture, and size similar to the traditional Oreo.
As a member of the gluten-free community, I think I can speak for us all when I say I am so grateful for brands large and small who invest in making gluten-free options for us that taste like nostalgic foods from our gluten-eating days.
As a reminder, we purchased all of these cookies with our own money and it is in no way sponsored by any brand so it can be a 100% honest review. We hope you found it helpful!
After many years with little to no options on the market, it’s so nice to have choices.
Have you tried them yet? Would love to know your opinion!

I like the gluten free oreos until I dip them in milk. They get gummy and lose that authentic oreo feel. I miss doing the milk dunk.

@Alison M., I'm a little surprised they scored Glutino how they did. They are a little fall apart in milk, but I find their taste and texture to be great.
